As usual media hype, Coco Gauff ridiculed online after her shocking defeat to Jelena Ostapenko

Coco Gauff, the young sensation from America could not continue her impeccable form in the 2023 Australian Open. The 18-year-old fell victim to Jelena Ostapeknko in the fourth round after having a ruthless week. The straight-set loss against the Latvian makes her the latest casualty in the list of top seeds exiting the Australian Open before the quarterfinals.

Coming out of the ASB Classics title win, Gauff was one of the favorites in Melbourne too. Putting up a solid display of performance she won her first three matches without dropping a set. Emma Raducanu, the 2021 US Open champion was one of her victims earlier.

With the win, the 2017 French Open champion Ostapenko leveled her career head-to-head against Gauff to 1-1 with a 93-minute triumph in Margaret Court Arena. This was her first Round 4 appearance at the Australian Open. Gauff on the other hand was teary-eyed after the match.

Fans online react to the exit of Coco Gauff

The American teenager was totally dejected after a heartbreaking loss against the Latvian Jelena Ostepanako. She broke down in tears in the post-match press conference. “I worked really hard and I felt really good coming into the tournament, and I still feel good,” Gauff told reporters,” she said with her voice breaking.

“I still feel like I’ve improved a lot. But, you know, when you play a player like her and she plays really well, it’s like there’s nothing you can do,” she continued. “So it’s a little bit frustrating on that part,” Gauff further added.

The Twitter users on the other hand were unforgiving to Gauff. Despite the solid performance before the fourth-round match, she became the subject of online ridicule right after the defeat. Here are some of the tweets.

Coco Gauff's loss to Ostapenko is just a reminder that even the youngest players can't escape the 'Ostapenk-ing' #AusOpen

Coco Gauff is so overhyped for someone who has won nothing, if penko is in form she can’t be the underdog

Coco Gauff doesn’t want this greatness man

Ostapenko was crushing the ball, taking away time. Coco seemed overwhelmed.

I just don't understand why @CocoGauff doesn't employ her tactics from her doubles. For example when she plays doubles, she is so aware of court position, she gets to net a lot, she redirects balls away from opposition etc etc. Why doesn't she do a lot of this on singles?

— Harrison Murbi (@HarrisonTalent) January 22, 2023

Coco Gauff’s dominance as a 12-16 year old was simply due to the genetic and mature advantage she had over other girls. At the professional level, she does not have the physical advantage anymore, thus these hard court slam exits really should not surprise anyone.

Huge opportunity missed for Coco Gauff 😔

As usual the media overhype Coco Gauff. Too bad, she’s still young.
