Introduction

Keanu Reeves is a Canadian professional actor with an estimated net worth of $380 Million.

Reeves became one of the world’s highest-paid actors through the roles of Neo in The Matrix and John Wick. Both franchises have released four movies to date, with The Matrix proving the bigger success at the box office.

Despite similarities between the two franchises, Keanu’s earnings from them couldn’t be more different. Thanks to negotiating backend points for his role as Neo, he earned almost $200 million from playing the character, compared to just $21 million for John Wick.

Quick Facts

  • Earned just $3,000 for Youngblood (1986)
  • The Matrix franchise accounts for $175-$200 million in earnings
  • Earned $21 million from the John Wick franchise
  • Toy Story 4 is Keanu’s highest-grossing movie ($1.07 billion)

Early Life

Keanu Reeves was born in Beirut to Patricia and Samuel Reeves on September 2, 1964.

When Reeves was three years old, his father left, although they remained in touch until Reeves was 6. His mother married four other times, meaning Reeves moved around internationally until the family settled in Toronto, Ontario.

Reeves struggled academically due to a combination of dyslexia and anger problems. However, he excelled at sports, particularly hockey, and attended four schools in five years, mainly because he had been expelled. He dreamed of playing hockey professionally, but a sports injury forced him to stop playing in high school. Eventually, he dropped out of school altogether.

Career

Keanu Reeves began his career as a correspondent for the CBC youth program Going Great in 1984 and an episode of the series Hangin’ In.

In 1985, he played Mercutio in a production of Romeo and Juliet at the Leah Posluns Theatre in Ontario. During this time, his agents advised him to go by a different name because they felt Keanu was “too ethnic.” While he went by “K.C.” and “Casey” for a few auditions, he reverted to using his given name.

Towards the end of the 1980s, Reeves appeared in several teen dramas, including The Night Before and The Prince of Pennsylvania.

In 1989, he starred in Ron Howard’s comedy-drama Parenthood and Paula Abdul’s music video for “Rush Rush.”

Breakthrough Roles

In 1991, Keanu Reeves starred in Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey and My Own Private Idaho with Joaquin Phoenix’s brother, River.

After appearing in the action thriller Point Break in 1991, Reeves won Most Desirable Male at the MTV Movie Awards. Soon after, he became interested in music and formed the alt-rock bank Dogstar, active throughout the 90s.

Reeves then played Jonathan Harker in Dracula alongside Gary Oldman and Winona Ryder, earning critical praise for his role.

In 1995, he landed a leading role in the cyberpunk thriller Johnny Mnemonic and appeared in the romantic comedy A Walk in the Clouds. Following his role in Chain Reaction, Reeves went on tour with Dogstar after turning down a role in Speed 2: Cruise Control. He ended the 1990s by starring as Thomas Anderson in The Matrix, a role that would gain him international recognition.

International Stardom

Due to the success of The Matrix, Keanu Reeves became a household name, but he didn’t let it go to his head.

In 2000, he starred in The Replacements and took a pay cut so Gene Hackman could co-star. He then starred in The Gift (2000) and Sweet November (2001) before his band, Dogstar, disbanded after a decade together. Reeves starred in The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions in 2003, released in May and November, respectively.

Two years later, he played the title role in Constantine and then A Scanner Darkly, which premiered at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival.

In 2008, he appeared in the crime thriller Street Kings and The Day the Earth Stood Still, which garnered a Razzie nomination. He made his directorial debut in 2013 with the martial arts film Man of Tai Chi, and while critics praised it, commercially, it did poorly.

Nothing But Success

Reeves’ subsequent success came with the 2014 film John Wick, which grossed $86 million worldwide and rebounded his career. He reprised this role in 2017 in John Wick: Chapter 2, which was a commercial and critical success, grossing $171 million. In 2018, he reunited with Winona Ryder in Destination Wedding and the following year returned in John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum.

At the same time, he voiced Duke Caboom in Toy Story 4 and then played himself in Always Be My Maybe.

A year later, Reeves appeared with Danny Trejo in The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, where he played a tumbleweed. Reeves played a significant role in the video game Cyberpunk 2077 and its DLC Phantom Liberty as the character Johnny Silverhand.

In March 2023, he reprised his role as John Wick in John Wick: Chapter 4, and in January 2024 started filming Aziz Ansari’s Good Fortune.

Early Career Salaries

Before mainstream fame through The Matrix and John Wick franchises, Reeves was already earning impressive paydays. However, his earliest recorded salary was just $3,000 for Youngblood in 1986. At the end of the 80s, Reeves received $95,000 for Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure.

Although we don’t know how much he earned for 1993’s Point Break, his first recorded seven-figure salary was $1.2 million for Speed (1994). The film was a huge success, grossing $350 million at the box office on just a $30 million budget. Reeves’ ability to generate such a high ROI instantly increased his salary. In 1995, he earned $2 million for Johnny Mnemonic; in 1997, he earned $8 million for The Devil’s Advocate.

The Matrix Earnings

Keanu’s first 8-figure payday was for his appearance as Neo in The Matrix (1999). He was paid $10 million upfront for the role but received a 10% backend percentage, resulting in roughly $35 million in compensation. The sequels scored Reeves upfront salaries of $15 million apiece for The Matrix Revolutions and The Matrix Reloaded, plus a $14 million salary for The Matrix Resurrections.

His reported backend percentage of the profits for Revolutions and Reloaded increased to 15%. When all is said and done, Keanu likely earned between $175 million and $200 million from the franchise, primarily due to backend points.

John Wick Salary

In contrast to The Matrix, Keanu’s earnings from the four John Wick films are a slightly different story. He reportedly earned $1.5 million for John Wick, $2 million for Chapter 2, and $2.5 million for Chapter 3. The franchise’s success made a pay rise inevitable, with Reeves earning $15 million for the fourth installment. Thus, he earned $21 million in total.

Estimated Net Worth

In 2024, Keanu Reeves’ net worth is $380 Million.

Highest-Grossing Movies

While most people know Reeves from The Matrix or John Wick franchises, neither accounts for the top-grossing movie of his career. It was, in fact, his role as Duke Caboom in Toy Story 4, which grossed $1.07 billion worldwide against a $200 million budget.

The original Matrix trilogy ranks second, third, and fifth on his list, accounting for $1.64 billion combined. The fourth film in the franchise, The Matrix Resurrections, missed the list, only grossing $157 million. Two of the four John Wick films made the list: John Wick: Chapter 4 appeared fourth ($440 million), and Chapter 3 at seventh ($328 million). The franchise accounts for $1.03 billion of Reeves’ gross box office value overall.
