NC school counselor resigns after sharing 'disappointment' Trump shooter 'missed'

A North Carolina school counselor resigned Tuesday after reportedly posting on social media she was disappointed former President Donald Trump survived his assassination attempt.

Amanda Brewer, who worked at Boonville Elementary in Yadkin County, wrote on Facebook that she needed to do some “reflecting” and “work” after acknowledging her disappointment, according to local outlet WXII12.

I’m currently sitting on the beach this afternoon disturbed by the fact, sickened with myself that I was disappointed the shooter missed when I saw the news yesterday,” Brewer wrote. “I have allowed that horrible, HORRIBLE man to make me bitter enough to have such an experience.”

Trump said he was shot in the ear during a rally in Butler, Pa. on Saturday. The former president has previously experienced threats to his health, like when he tested positive for COVID-19 during the first year of the pandemic.

“I was horrified when folks on social media posted they hoped he would die when he had Covid in 2020,” Brewer added. “Have I become that cynical?”

Yadkin County Schools Assistant Superintendent Boomer Kennedy confirmed the counselor’s resignation to Crisis in the Classroom (CITC).

“Yadkin County Schools is aware of comments recently posted on social media by former YCS staff member Amanda Brewer,” he wrote. “After being made aware of the comments, YCS officials immediately opened an investigation to address the matter. YCS officials accepted a letter of resignation from Amanda Brewer, effective July 16, 2024."

The counselor told WXII12 she made the post in a “very weak moment.”

"I made a statement — but the statement I was trying to make was that the climate of the past four years has pushed me to bitterness and that I recognized it," Brewer said. "I was disgusted by it, and I fully took into accountability that I need to do some work. It's not the type of person I am. I don't condone violence, ever.”

Brewer's resignation comes as teachers nationwide face disciplinary action for their social media posts regarding the assassination attempt. Oklahoma State Superintendent of Public Instruction Ryan Walters threatened Tuesday to revoke the teaching certificate of Alison Scott, who wrote on Facebook "wish they had a better scope." In South Dakota, Cassandra Oleson no longer works for the Sioux Falls School District after reportedly posting "Shoot ~ If only he would've had his scope sighted in correctly."

In Pennsylvania, a fire chief also resigned after allegedly posting on social media that he supported the assassination attempt. Jim Simmonds, who was the Prospect Park fire marshal, backed the shooting on Facebook, according to the borough.
